  • Reflections on transformational innovation

    These are my reflective notes as I work through chapter two of Daniel Wahl’s ‘Designing Regenerative Cultures‘. My aim in this reading is to find clues as to what a set of principles for regenerative design for engineers could look like.

    Wahl introduces three types of innovation:

    • Sustaining innovation – that which keeps the current system working
    • Disruptive innovation – that which introduces new operating systems
    • Transformative innovation – that which is the ‘long-term innovation process of fundamental changes in culture and identity.

    He argues that if we want to achieve a transition towards a regenerative culture, it is this third kind of innovation that we need.

  • Rethinking our relationship with our ecosystem

    Yesterday I was writing about what to do after declaring a biodiversity emergency. My conclusions was that the process starts with rethinking our relationship to our ecosystem. Not how can we do something to our ecosystem but how can we work with it. Today I want to get into more ways that we can achieve this shift in the way we think.

    The working week as a cultural phenomenon

    As someone who runs their own small business, I have to figure out how to work with fluctuating levels of client work. There are times when there is more to do and I have to put in the extra hours, and others when there is down time.

    I’m a stronger believer in avoiding work for work’s sake. There is the work that needs to be done: work in the home; paid work; work in the community. But then it is important to rest, to find balance, to find joy outside work.

    But if your rest time corresponds with when everyone else is working, I find it feels very difficult not to feel like you should be doing something.

    Culture of climate emergency

    If you are interested in understanding how your organisation should perform in the climate emergency then you should be interested in organisational culture. An emergency is a state in which we require people to behave differently to normal and take urgent action.

    We can understand organisational culture as the way a group of people get things done. If we want people to behave differently in the climate emergency then we need to change our organisational culture to one that is more appropriate to the urgency of the situation.
